Repeat offender fined RM1,500 over RM1 illegal parking charge

GEORGE TOWN: A former parking attendant was slapped with a RM1,500 fine by a magistrate’s court for illegally taking RM1 in parking fee from a car driver.

Repeat offender Ammanullah Shahul Hamid, 50, admitted committing the offence at Jalan Service in Persiaran Gurney at about 6.50pm on Sept 14.

The offence under Section 50(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987, carries a fine of not more than RM2,000 or jail of not more than six months. For the subsequent offence, the accused is liable to a fine of not more than RM4,000 or jail of not more than 12 months or both.

Ammanullah, from Jalan Perak, Penang, was arrested on the same day he committed the offence.

On Sept 7, last year, Ammanullah had also pleaded guilty to committing a similar offence.

He was then fined RM500 in default one month jail. He had paid the fine.

Ammanullah was represented by counsel Siti Zhamaliah Mohd Ismail, from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

In mitigation, Siti Zhamaliah said that the accused, who has four children, was remorseful.

Prosecuting officer ASP Ahmad Padzli pressed for a deterrent sentence.

Magistrate Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid imposed the fine on Ammanullah in default three months’ jail.

At press time yesterday, Ammanullah failed to pay the fine.
