Eight men beat up cop at construction site

IPOH: A police corporal was beaten up by eight men after he tried to stop them from stealing mosaic tiles from the Taman Sri Wangi Lahat construction site here.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong (pix) said the policeman was beaten until he fell unconscious during the incident on Thursday at about 6pm.

"He was on his way to work at about 4pm when he saw the helmet-wearing men alighting from four motorcycles and entering the construction site.

"He got down from his car and followed them where he saw them trying to steal the tiles," ACP Sum said here on Friday.

"The victim caught one of the suspects and a scuffle ensued," he added.

He said the suspect's accomplices then tried to help him and beat the policeman until the victim fell unconscious.

"When he came about, he found his pistol missing.

"The policeman stumbled out from the construction site and saw a colleague who brought him to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment," ACP Sum said.

He said a forensics team that was dispatched to the construction site found one Smith and Wesson pistol with five bullets and two wooden sticks.

"We have also recorded the statements from two witnesses.

"The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code (relates to possession of weapons during a riot)," he said.

"Police are still trying to locate the suspects," ACP Sum added.
