JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested a man for taking online bets on the UEFA Euro football championship.
Johor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the suspect, who operated from a house in Taman Suria Muafakat, was believed to be part of a syndicate.
“We nabbed the man, a local, aged 43, inside the house,” he said.
SAC Kamarul Zaman said the syndicate had a total credit limit of between RM2mil and RM10mil, and almost RM21mil in bets placed.
He said police seized two computers, four monitors, a mobile phone, a calculator, three telephone bills and 17 A4-size betting sheets.
The case is being investigated under Section 6 (3) of the Betting Act 1953. If convicted, the suspect could be fined up to RM200,000, or jailed up to five years, or both.
