ALOR SETAR: All Muslim food outlets and restaurants in Kedah will not be allowed to operate before 3pm during the Ramadan month, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.
“I hope all the operators will abide by the regulation set by the state government, in respect of the holy month.
“This regulation is the same as the one enforced last year,” he told reporters after launching a gotong-royong programme in conjunction with Ramadan in Mukim Padang Hang here on Friday.
Ahmad Bashah said the authorities were aware that some food operators would disobey the regulation, especially in areas where the majority of potential patrons were non-Muslims.
“I will leave it to the Kedah Islamic Religious Department to check and take the necessary action if this happens.
“I’ve also directed the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to monitor the price of goods at Ramadan bazaars so that traders will not take advantage by increasing prices,” he added.
Meanwhile, Kedah Religious Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Rawi Abd Hamid warned that punitive action would be taken against Muslim patrons who were to buy food or drink before 3pm.
