THE backlash to Malaysian transgender rights activist Nisha Ayub receiving the 2016 US Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award win recently once again highlights how intensely divisive the issue of transgender is in our country.

While many commended Nisha for her human rights work – co-founding two NGOs to aid and support the transgender community, the SEED Foundation and Justice for Sisters – others questioned the US agenda for the award.
