Man stabbed to death at coffee shop ‘for no reason’

The area where the stabbing took place being cornered off by the police for further investigations.

GEORGE TOWN: A 58-year-old man died after he was stabbed in the back at a coffee shop in Gat Lebuh Macallum, Weld Quay, here.

Lim Cheong Wah was rushed to the Penang Hospital with the knife still stuck in his back but succumbed to the injury.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said a suspect, 42, was arrested after the 7pm incident.

“The knife used was still lodged in the victim’s back when he was sent to the hospital,” he said yesterday.

“The victim and the assailant did not know each other. We are investigating if there is a motive.”

ACP Mior said the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Lim’s distraught wife, who declined to be named, said she recognised the suspect and had seen him around the area.

“He suddenly came up from behind and stabbed my husband. I believe he is not mentally stable but did not expect him to be harmful,” she said when met at the hospital.

A post-mortem will be conducted today.
