Fire breaks out on Express Rakyat train near Taiping

IPOH: A fire broke out on an Express Rakyat locomotive near Kuala Tanjung, soon after the train departed the Taiping station on Thursday night.

Firefighters are currently in the process of extinguishing the blaze and no one is reported to have been injured in the incident, a Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said. 

A passenger on board the train said the fire is under control and passengers have been told to remain their respective coaches.

“The incident occurred under the overhead bridge. The train was heading north,” said the man who boarded the train in Kuala Lumpur and who declined to be named.

The Fire Department received a distress call at 8.43pm and immediately sent a team from its Kamunting station to the spot.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

On Tuesday, a fire broke out on another Express Rakyat train, about a kilometre from the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) Sungai Gadut Station.
