3,400 heads of cattle vaccinated in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU: More than 3,400 cows and buffaloes have been vaccinated by the Veterinary Services Department following a foot and mouth disease outbreak in the state.

State department director Dr Abdul Razak Mohd Zailan said the latest outbreak occurred in Kampung Gong Manok, Besut district, where three cows were infected.

“Our inspection team determined this after the cattle owner informed us that three of the eight owned by the breeder showed symptoms of the disease,” he said.

The foot and mouth disease in the state was first detected in Kuala Terengganu at the end of last month, involving four heads of cattle from four breeders in four villages.

Dr Abdul Razak said the operation to vaccinate the cattle to prevent an outbreak of the disease was launched on Sunday in the state.

He said the department had set up a mobile team comprising officers and staff who would go to the affected areas.

He also said, so far, no cattle had died since the outbreak of the disease was reported, adding that the situation was under control. — Bernama
