MALACCA: All a teenager wanted was to earn some extra money so that his family could break fast with better food.
However, this angered his labourer father who hit him with a wooden club until he collapsed on Saturday evening.
Muhamad Hafiz Abd Ghani, 17, was found motionless on his bed when his 38-year-old mother Siti Habibah Ismail tried to wake him up for sahur at about 4am at their Kampung Jawa home in Alor Gajah here yesterday.
Siti Habibah said her 52-year-old husband, who worked as a construction worker, hit Muhamad Hafiz with a wooden club after Muhamad Hafiz told him of his intention to work and earn extra income for the family at about 5pm on Saturday.
“Hafiz told his father that he intended to work and earn some extra money to buy better food for the family to break fast during the month of Ramadan.
“We have been breaking fast with only porridge, banana fritters and water everyday.
“However, he (the father) suddenly got angry and reached for a stick before hitting Hafiz,” she said here yesterday, adding that her son collapsed and she had to pull him away to his room.
Siti Habibah said she was shocked when she found Muhamad Hafiz motionless and cold when she wanted to wake him up for sahur.
She then lodged a police report at about 7am yesterday.
Alor Gajah deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Abd Rahman Jid said the police were now hunting for the father who had gone missing after the incident.
