Chaos at PKR meet

KOTA KINABALU: A shortage of ballot papers plunged the Tenom PKR division meeting into chaos, forcing the division to call off its election.

Hundreds of angry delegates mobbed the interior division’s secretariat in an attempt to get their hands on the ballot papers that ran out after just 300 were given out to delegates.

As tempers flared at Perkasa Hotel on Saturday evening, PKR’s Tenom division election director Nazri Udoi called off the meeting and blamed the state PKR election secretariat for miscalculating the number of delegates.

“We received 300 ballots but we have about 2,000 delegates,” Nazri said, adding that the 300 ballots that had been cast would be destroyed in front of the candidates vying for the various positions in the Tenom division committee.

Incumbent Tenom division chief Masdin Tumas is being challenged by Adris Taripin and Daniel Rigay.

Sabah PKR chairman Datuk Lajim Ukin said only the Tenom meeting had been cancelled and they expected it to be held on May 10 after getting the green light from PKR headquarters.

Apart from Tenom, the division meetings held over the weekend in Sabah had been smooth, said Lajim, who was returned unopposed as Beaufort division chief.

Lajim, who is Klias state assemblyman and state opposition leader, said there were complaints about the slow election process but generally, the whole process had gone on smoothly.

Of the state’s 26 divisions, including Labuan FT, 21 divisions are seeing fierce contests for the division chief’s position.

Among those being challenged is former Sabah PKR chief Ahmad Thamrin Jaini, who is defending his Sandakan division chief post against two other contenders.
