PETALING JAYA: Penang Umno Youth has warned PKR supporters, especially those from the Machang Bubuk branch, to refrain from highlighting the kangkung issue any more as the cost of living rose this year after some subsidies were reduced.
Describing it as “uncouth” and “low-class mentality”, the movement slammed a small group of PKR supporters for stuffing water spinach into the mouth of a mock figure of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak made of styrofoam on Thursday in Bukit Mertajam.
The flashmob was organised by Machang Bubok assemblyman Lee Khai Loon, who was reported to have said the event was to raise awareness about price hikes burdening the people.
”It won’t to help bring down the cost of living,” said the movement’s chief Rafizal Abd Rahim said in a statement on Thursday.
“Their action is only to gain cheap publicity. The responsible thing to do is to work with the government to find the source of the rising costs, especially the action of the “middle men” who monopolise the market of daily necessities,” he said.
The movement also asked everyone to stop politicising the kangkung issue in the media.
He added that the movement would “defend the country’s leaders” from being insulted.
“We would like to warn PKR Machang against insulting our leaders. If they continue to be stubborn they will have to face Umno Youth,” he said.
Netizens have lampooned a remark by Najib who said in a speech that while the government was blamed and criticised for price rises, it was never praised when price of some items, such as the kangkung, went down recently.
Najib’s remark triggered a furore of ridicule on the Internet, including video clips uploaded on YouTube.
Many Facebook pages on Kangkung have been created while some netizens declared Jan 13 as “World Kangkung Day”.
The remark and its response had also been reported in the foreign media, including the BBC.
