Man who tried to steal deity's 200-year-old diamonds beaten up

GEORGE TOWN: A 35-year-old man who allegedly tried to steal some 200-year-old diamonds from the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling here was beaten up before being arrested.

The temple’s operations director, who wanted to be known only as Tan, said the man had shattered the glass panel housing the Kuan Yin statue with a hammer before attempting to pluck the priceless stones off its forehead at 1.10pm yesterday.
