Firm goes on a green mission

The 4,900sq m site where the plant will be located

TORAY Group (Malaysia) is set to save 20% in energy and reduce its carbon emission by 30% starting from 2016, in line with its Green and Environmental friendly objectives.

Its managing director Hiroshi Yoshimura said Toray Group recently concluded a deal with Gas Malaysia Energy Advances Sdn Bhd (GMEA), a joint-venture company established by Energy Advance Co Ltd of Japan and Gas Malaysia Berhad, to operate and utilise a ‘Gas Turbine Co-Generation Systems’ at its premises in Prai, Penang.

The plant, located on a 4,900sq m site, is currently undergoing construction, and will be completed in 2016.

“Under this sustainable development arrangement and energy supply agree-ment, GMEA will install two 16-megawatt class gas turbines with supplementary firing heat recovery steam generators for the supply of electricity and steam needed by Toray’s plants in Penang.”

Yoshimura said Gas Malaysia Berhad would supply the natural gas while GMEA was responsible for all the phases of the project which ranged from system de-sign, construction, procurement of fuel to facility maintenance.

“Through this agreement, Toray will be able to save energy and reduce carbon dioxide emission by approximately 20% and 30% respectively.

“In accordance to plan, GMEA undertakes to supply electricity and steam to Toray in Penang for a duration of 15 years from year 2016,” he said.

This co-generation system at Toray Malaysia’s plant is GMEA’s first energy supply project in Malaysia.
