15-minute show never fails to amaze visitors to Jong’s Crocodile Farm

KUCHING: Feeding time at Jong’s Crocodile Farm in Siburan near here is one of the main attractions for visitors, who get to see the powerful reptiles in action.

A bell will be rung for about a minute before the start of the show, which is held twice daily at 11am and 3pm, signalling to the crocodiles that their food is ready.

Dozens of crocodiles will leap out of the water to snap pieces of meat suspended from a rope above the pond.

Visitors can sit around the pond to watch the 15-minute show and marvel at the power and agility of these magnificent creatures.

The ponds at the farm are all fenced up to enable visitors to view the action in safety.

According to keeper Robert Llod, 48, the crocodiles are usually more active in leaping for the meat in the morning compared to the evening.

“Some of them can jump as high as 3m. In each session, about 50kg of chicken and beef are needed to feed the crocodiles.”

He added that he was used to feeding the crocodiles and facing them at close hand.

His duties also include keeping an eye on their movement and monitoring the breeding programme at the farm.

Located about 30km from here, Jong’s Crocodile Farm is well known as a tourist spot.

It is open daily from 9am to 5pm. Entry fees are RM16 for adults and RM8 for children.
