Get pointers: Ndereba will hold workshop at the event next month.
THE Malaysia Women’s Marathon is back and the goal of MWM 2014 is to encourage women to run.
At the inaugural MWM last year, history was made when it became not only the first women’s marathon in Malaysia, but also the first women’s marathon in the Asia-Pacific, including India and New Zealand.
This year there will be a three-pronged programme, aptly themed: “Dream, Believe and Become”, and staged from March 14 to 16.
The event will begin with a dialogue session led by powerful female individuals, who hold important and pivotal positions in huge organisations.
Among the speakers are NTV7 group general manager Airin Zainul, AirAsia Berhad CEO Aireen Omar, Selangor Tourism, Consumer Affairs and Environment committee chairman Elizabeth Wong and Selangor Welfare & Women Affairs committee chairman Rodziah Ismail.
The second day will see four-time Boston Marathon winner Catherine Ndereba from Kenya conducting a workshop for runners.
The opening two days are the build-up to the marathon itself that will be flagged off at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam.
“The marathon offers a niche in sports tourism, where world-famous athletes such as the winners of the Boston Marathon, Paris Marathon, Virgin London Marathon and other leading runners from all around the world attend the event,” said Wong.
“We have an opportunity to nurture MWM to become a world-class event and invite celebrated marathoners to Selangor.”
Wong also urged women to take part in the fun run 5km event.
“I ran my first easy marathon last year and felt empowered,” she said.
“The feeling is incredible and I would like to share the experience with my fellow ladies.”
She added that she would also be participating in the run this year.
The main sponsors for this year include General Electric, Prudential, Avon Malaysia and KT Tape.
Habib Jewels will be sponsoring some prizes, while Milo, Maggi, Nescafe and Dove will chip in with several of their products.
Capital FM returns as the official radio station, while NTV7 is the official media and Celebrity Fitness remains the official health centre and gym.
