Divider along Jalan Timur is recommended to improve traffic flow

PETALING Jaya City councillors want the public to be informed on why access from the Federal Highway (Klang-bound) into Persiaran Barat, off Jalan Timur, will be temporarily closed from Feb 15.

Councillor Lim Yi Wei said banners informing on this move did not state the reasons for the new traffic movement which would affect motorists wanting to get to Amcorp Mall from the Federal Highway turn-off.

Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) had earlier informed that a temporary road divider would be placed along Jalan Timur, next to Amcorp Mall from the Jalan Timur-Federal Highway overpass, until the Tenaga Nasional Building.

The divider would be there from Feb 15 to March 14 to prevent motorists from weaving their vehicles across five lanes.

The move was recommended by a road safety auditor appointed by MBPJ to vet its one-way loop.

Following Lim’s suggestion at the full board meeting yesterday Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain instructed Engineering Department director Ismail Shafie to provide reasons for the change to the public.

“Explain to the public in simple terms to ensure they understand that the move is for safety reasons,” he said.

Councillor Derek Fernandez also requested for action to be taken against motorists found double- and triple-parking along the loop.

“We should have the Automated Enforcement System (AES) where pictures of the offence are sent to the offenders.

“This way, our enforcement officers need not argue or negotiate with traffic offenders,” said Fernandez.

Earlier in his speech, Mohd Azizi said the Petaling Jaya Neighbourhood Safety Team Programme (PKKPJ) would continue into 2017 under the “PJ Safe” programme.

“We have increased the allocation to RM900,000,” he said.
