KUALA LUMPUR: Bangsar residents are upset that 16 trees along Jalan Ara have been marked with an “X” as this is usually indicates they will be felled.

It is believed that the mature trees may have to make way for a road widening and drainage project.

Ng Seksan, from Lucky Garden, questioned the need for the upgrade.

“My house is very close to the drains that will be upgraded and I have never seen them overflow.

“I also use the road everyday and there are no traffic jams,” he said.

They fear contractors may come anytime to cut down the trees and cited an illegal tree felling which took place along Jalan Cochrane in Cheras last month. 

The Armed Forces Fund Board was fined RM300,000 for felling 16 trees along a stretch after submitting a road widening proposal that had yet to be approved.

A boutique operator who only wanted to be known as Lee, also expressed concern.

“Why would someone survey and mark trees when the status of the project has not been determined?

“I don’t see a reason for any such project to be approved.

“The only time the road is congested is during Friday prayers as the mosque is located here. 

“I do not want the beautiful canopy of trees destroyed,” she said

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) could not be reached at press time.
