For example, while many modern DSLRs and mirrorless cameras have sensors to determine colour and white balance, the interpretation of this raw information the camera receives and the correction applied to the image is down to software.

In fact, you can see this happening when you compare images taken with say, a Nikon camera compared with images taken with a Canon -- there’s a “Nikon look” and a “Canon look” to the images taken with the respective brand cameras.
