Musica too good for Malaysian Tigers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Tigers Badminton Club can walk tall despite losing 2-3 to favourites Musica Champion in the final of the Indonesian Super League in Jakarta.

The Malaysian team, led by first singles shuttler Liew Daren, bowed out after battling for four hours and 33 minutes.

The winners got US$40,000 while the Malaysians earned US$20,000.

It was sweet revenge for Musica Champion after losing to the Malaysians 2-3 in their opening Group B tie last Sunday. Then, Daren had scored a famous win over compatriot and world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei.

Yesterday, though, Daren fought gallantly before going down 21-11, 14-21, 16-21 to Tommy Sugiarto.

Chong Wei did not play in the final as he was only committed to playing two matches with the club.

The Malaysians had a good chance to equal the score but world No. 9 Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong surprisingly lost 21-16, 19-21, 11-21 to the scratch pair of Rian Sukamwan-Rendy Wijaya.

Chong Wei Feng and Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem levelled the score after winning their respective matches. Wei Feng upset veteran Lee Hyun-il 21-15, 21-19 while Khim Wah-V Shem downed Fran Kurniawan-Hadi Saputra 22-20, 21-19.

It was then up to Arif to get the winning point but he fell 18-21, 19-21 to Chou Tien-chen.
