PALEMBANG: Desperate Frenz United Indonesia (FUI) needed a big win to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Frenz International Cup Under-18 tournament.
And the Indonesian side, comprising players from Iran and Malaysia, did just that in their last Group A match when they defeated Guangzhou Evergrande 3-0 at the Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium in Jakabaring here last night.
Goals by Mohd Amirul Muhammad (26th), Ade Ivan Hafilah (34th) and Reza Karimi (75th) got the goals to secure them the runners-up spot in the group ahead Feyenoord on goal difference.
FUI will face Group B winners SC Internacional in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
Liverpool top the group with the maximum nine points after defeating Feyenoord 2-0 in an earlier match, thanks to strikes by Nicholas Callum (25th minute) and substitute Harry Wilson (71st).
In Group C, Porto topped the group after edging second-placed Gamba Osaka 1-0 at the UiTM Mini Stadium in Bangi yesterday. Both teams have qualified for the quarter-finals.
In another match, Besiktas finished third in the group after beating PVF Vietnam 2-1.
