KUALA LUMPUR: China’s Five-time world champion Lin Dan will take part in the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) in South Korea from April 22-27.
But badminton fans hoping to see Lin Dan clashing with Malaysia’s world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in the tournament will be disappointed.
Malaysia have had to pay the organisers, Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC), a fine of US$2,000 (RM6,500) for withdrawing Chong Wei from the men’s singles event.
The ABC will be Lin Dan’s second tournament this year. He will make his return to competition in the China Masters Grand Prix Gold in Jiangsu, China, on Wednesday.
The back-to-back tournaments will be Lin Dan’s first two appearances in the world badminton circuit since beating Chong Wei in the final of the World Championships in Guangzhou in August last year.
This year, the format and rules for the annual ABC meet have completely been revamped.
Previously, every nation could nominate their team members. This time, the shuttlers have to qualify based on the Asian rankings and those who withdraw without a medical letter will be fined.
A country can have a maximum of four players each in the men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles and a maximum of three entries each in the men’s doubles and women’s doubles. The draw is limited to 32 players for every event.
When a player is withdrawn, the next best ranked player will be eligible for the championships.
This is BAC’s way of ensuring only quality players compete in their main tournament and to revive the profile of their event.
In the BAC’s final phase of qualifiers list, China have confirmed world No. 107 Lin Dan and two juniors – Xue Song and Guo Kai.
China, however, are expected to be penalised for withdrawing Chen Long, Du Pengyu and Wang Zhengming.
In the absence of Chong Wei, Malaysia will be represented by Chong Wei Feng, Liew Daren and Goh Soon Huat.
Malaysia are also expected to pay more fines for withdrawing top men’s doubles pairs Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong and Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem. Malaysia will be represented by back-up pairs Chooi Kah Ming-Teo Ee Yi-Nelson Hen Wei Keat-Low Juan Shen.
