Liow: Probe on to find culprits behind single-stream system questionnaire

No such survey: Liow explaining the issue to the media during the press conference in Putrajaya.

PUTRAJAYA: There will not be any survey on a single-stream education system in Malaysia, says MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said investigations were under way to identify the culprits responsible for uploading online the questionnaire which seeks public response on whether there should only be a single-stream education system in the country.

The document was published via Google Forms, bearing the logo of the Information Department, which falls under the Communications and Multimedia Ministry.

Malaysia’s education system is multi-stream and its citizens are guaranteed the right to mother-tongue education as enshrined under the Federal Constitution.

Commenting on the document on Tuesday, MCA deputy president and education consultative committee chairman Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said: “No one is allowed to challenge our multi-stream education system and MCA will not compromise on this matter.”

Liow said the minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak had assured him that the survey would not be conducted, and that such an incident would not recur and action would be taken against the culprits.

“Conducting such a survey is tantamount to going against the Barisan Nasional spirit and the Federal Constitution.

“While investigations are under way, it is important for the public to know that this survey is not done on the order of the Government, the ministry or the department,” Liow told reporters here yesterday.

Liow, who is also Transport Minister, and Salleh had discussed the issue before the Cabinet meeting here earlier.

He said he had informed Salleh that the issue had caused concern among the people, especially the Chinese community.

Checks by The Star on the Internet for the said document yesterday showed no results.
