Mercy Malaysia needs RM1mil for Myanmar operations

Emergency has been declared in four western regions in the country after heavy flooding this month caused by monsoon rains and Cyclone Komen.

PETALING JAYA: Mercy Malaysia is appealing for funds to help in their work in flood-hit Myanmar that has affected over a million people.

Emergency has been declared in four western regions in the country after heavy flooding this month caused by monsoon rains and Cyclone Komen.

Mercy has conducted mobile clinics at Mrauk U, Rakhine, whilst working closely with the State Health Department and other humanitarian agencies.

Mercy’s Rapid Assessment Team has entered the state of Sagaing with additional emergency aid.

“The need for emergency assistance and recovery support remains great,” said head of relief operations Said Alhudzari.

According to Myanmar’s Ministry of Health, 285 health facilities have been damaged in 38 townships in Chin, Sagaing, Rakhine, Magway, Shan, Ayeyarwady and Bago.

Mercy Malaysia’s emergency response phase is expected to last four weeks.

Said added that based on the assessments, Mercy’s entire response to the targeted affected areas is estimated to require funding of RM1mil for the next year.
