Nepal quake: Mercy Malaysia sends team to help in relief efforts

PETALING JAYA: Mercy Malaysia has sent an emergency medical team to Nepal to help in relief efforts following Saturday's massive earthquake which killed thousands.      

The volunteer relief organisation expects its Emergency Response Unit (ERU), which left for Nepal on Monday, to be in the country for at least a month. 

The eight-member ERU team consists of medical personnel, logisticians, doctors and surgeons, complete with a field hospital to serve the affected communities.

The field hospital will be set-up with a mini-surgery, an out-patient department (OPD) and a pharmaceutical service.

The team is led by Dr Heng Aik Cheng, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Traumatologist.

“We oversee that this exercise will take a long period and numerous deployments of medical teams between Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu, hence Mercy Malaysia seeks again the generosity of its donors and supporters to lend its assistance and contribution through our organization in humanitarian aid,” said its president Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus.

Saturday's quake has killed at least 3,200 people and left thousands of others injured and with vast “tent cities” springing up in the capital Kathmandu.

It has been reported that hospitals are inundated with people and many of the wounded are being treated on the streets.
