PETALING JAYA: A late night birthday celebration ended in tragedy for a college student after the car she was travelling in ran a red light and crashed into a traffic light under the Lebuh Bandar Utama flyover.

An oncoming vehicle then rammed into the Perodua MyVi, killing Chua Yee Jing, 20, and critically injuring the driver.

It is learnt that their car was exiting the 1 Utama shopping centre after the party at about 4.30am yesterday when the driver lost control of the car and crashed into the traffic light.

A traffic policeman, who was on duty at the flyover at that time, reported that the car had run a red light at the junction before hitting the post.

“A Volkswagen Scirocco travelling from Puchong towards Kepong at the time was unable to avoid the car and crashed into it. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene,” said Petaling Jaya traffic police chief Deputy Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif.

“The driver is being treated at the intensive care unit of the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.”

The driver of the Volkswagen sustained injuries on the chest.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Later, at the UMMC mortuary, where Chua’s family and friends had gathered to claim her body, there were tears as they grappled with news of the tragedy.

Her boyfriend Marcus Wong said Chua was a lovely person, who was dedicated to her family and performed good deeds through Buddhist social activities.

“It’s devastating for everyone who knew her,” he said, adding that Chua was studying at a make-up and beauty college.
