MALACCA: A grandmother and her four adopted grandchildren, including a young girl she saved from a child molester in February, have some reason to cheer this Raya, thanks to a generous couple.
Dr Jeggan Murugan and his wife Dr A. Sheela treated the family to a buka puasa meal at a fast food restaurant in Bukit Beruang on Wednesday and gave financial aid to Radziah Ramli and the children.
“Whatever it takes, my wife and I will make sure Radziah’s family have an enjoyable Hari Raya,” he said, adding that he would take Radziah and the children on a Hari Raya shopping spree at the Ramadan bazaar in Jalan Hang Tuah today.
Radziah, a volunteer with a social organisation here, goes around offering to do cleaning services for homes and offices to have enough to buy Hari Raya clothes for the children. She said she was grateful to the couple.
The 53-year-old grandmother looked for odd jobs to bring food to her family – a seven-year-old girl and three others she came to adopt as her “grandchildren” after her husband and son were killed in a road accident two decades ago.
Radziah, who is suffering from various ailments, including the prospect of losing her right eye to glaucoma, said she only had RM50 when the couple offered their help.
In February, her story was widely reported in the media after she saved the young girl from a lecherous man behind a community hall in Telok Mas.
She had taken the child and her 10-year-old brother to a meeting there, but later found both the children missing. She was shocked when she found a young man fondling the little girl, who had been stripped naked.
She dashed forward and pulled the child away from the molester, who delivered several punches on the woman and pushed her into a drain.
Hearing the commotion, others at the meeting came to their aid and nabbed the culprit.
Mahkota Parade general manager Mior Abdul Rahman Mohd Rejab said he and his assistant Grace Tan would provide a RM200 voucher to Radziah and the children.
