Tinted windows ops put on hold

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic police have postponed their proposed nationwide operation Ops Cermin Gelap on heavily tinted vehicle windows until further notice.

Federal Traffic chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff said they would not make a move on heavily tinted vehicles until the Transport Ministry released its findings on a study that is being carried out on the matter.

He said the Transport Ministry was in the midst of reviewing the rules on vehicle window tinting nationwide.

“It is only appropriate that we take action after a decision is made,” he said.

SAC Mohd Fuad, however, said the operation on illegal licence plates, strobe lights and motorists with outstanding summonses would go on as announced last month.

“We have already given motorists adequate time to rectify their vehicles.

“Those with strobe lights should remove them immediately as we had given them until June 1 to do so.

“Those with illegal licence plates still have until June 16 to rectify those modifications,” he said, urging motorists to abide by the traffic rules and regulations for their own safety.

SAC Mohd Fuad announced on May 15 that vehicle owners with licence plates and window tints that did not comply with regulations had until June 16 to “remedy the situation”.

He also urged vehicle owners who had installed unauthorised strobe or flashing lights to dismantle them immediately.

Under Rule 6(1) of the Motor Vehicle (Registration and Licensing) Rules 1959, the licence plate must be placed in an upright position and must be in accordance to specifications, he said.

As for window tints, Rule 5(1) and Rule 5(3) of Motor Vehicle (Prohibition of Certain Types of Glass) Rules 1991 stipulate that the minimum light transmission level of the front windshield is 70%, while windows and the rear windshield must allow at least 50% of light to pass through.
