Foreign worker killed at condo site in Pulau Tikus

GEORGE TOWN: A 38-year-old Indonesian construction worker fell to his death from the 22nd floor of a condominium building under construction in Pulau Tikus here when a support platform gave way.

Two other foreign workers also fell from the same floor, but survived.

The deceased and the two others, an Indonesian and a Myanmar national in their 40s, landed on an open space on the eighth floor of the building.

The two who survived the fall sustained serious injuries.

Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Department station chief A. Ravi said the trio were carrying out plastering work on the external wall of the building when the mishap occurred at around 9.30am yesterday.

“They were standing on the wooden platform outside the building which was supported by scaffolding.

The deceased and the injured were sent to the Penang Hospital.

It is believed that the RM47mil condominium is in the final stages of completion.

Pulau Tikus assemblyman Yap Soo Huey, who was at the scene, said she had received several complaints from nearby residents that construction materials were falling on to their roofs.

“I wrote to the developer to reinforce the netting, improve cleanliness and put safety measures in place,” she said.

Penang Municipal Council Building Department director Yew Tung Seang said the developer had been slapped with a stop-work order pending the outcome of investigations.

“We are very upset with them. How could this have happened?

“We are now waiting for the reports from the developer’s consultant as well as an explanation from the architect,” he said.

Meanwhile, Occupational Safety and Health Department director Mohd Anuar Embi said two teams had been sent to the site to carry out inspections.

“The investigation team is probing the incident while the building construction team is checking on the whole site to see if the developer complied with safety measures.

“If we find any non-compliance by the developer leading to the fatal accident, they can be brought to court,” he said.
