Jewellery store loses more than RM1mil in heist

PETALING JAYA: A jewellery store in a shopping mall in Damansara was robbed while its employees were on leave for the holiday season.

It is believed that the stolen jewellery were worth more than RM1mil.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said police received a report from the store manager at 10.40am Monday, alerting them of the incident.

“Following standard operating procedures, the employees deposited the jewellery into safe boxes at the end of their shift on Jan 29.

“They kept the safe boxes in rooms located at the back of the store before leaving for their holiday,” said ACP Arjunaidi.

He explained that the employees noticed that the safe boxes had been pried opened on Monday as they were setting up the store for business.

“We believe that the culprits had entered the premises through the rear door as there are signs of forced entry on the door.

“They might have used oxy-acetylene torches to cut open the safe deposit boxes,” ACP Arjunaidi said.

He added that police are still investigating as to why the removal of jewellery from the store did not set off the security alarm.

“We are waiting to review the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the store.

“We are investigating the theft from all angles, including the possibility of it being an inside job,” said ACP Arjunaidi, adding that police have yet to ascertain the time of the robbery and losses incurred by the crime.
