SEPANG: The Tanjong Sepat state assemblyman and a village head were injured when they fell from the popular “Lovers Jetty” that collapsed near here.
Mohd Haslin Hassan and Tai Hoo Chong were inspecting the rickety bridge at the time of the collapse.
The incident occurred at 1pm yesterday. Both were injured on the legs, back and body.
They were rushed to the nearby health clinic for treatment.
Kuala Langat councillor Wong Kim Loon was among the inspection team.
He said that they had gone to check on the condition of the bridge following a complaint which had been lodged by its committee members.
According to the complaint, the bridge was already badly damaged and had started to tilt.
“So, we went to check on the bridge to find some way to repair it,” Wong told China Press.
He said that while he was near the bridge, he heard a loud crash.
“When I turned, I saw that a stretch of the 100m-long bridge had collapsed.”
Mohd Haslin and Tai fell onto the sand below.
It was low tide at the time.
Apparently, the place is called Lovers Jetty as courting cou- ples frequent it to enjoy the sunset.
