Adventure awaits at Damai Cave Extreme Park

The challenging natural landscape at Damai Cave Extreme Park has made it a gathering spot for adrenaline junkies and outdoor enthusiasts.

The park boasts several natural caves and trekking trails and has the potential to be developed into an established outdoor and tourism attraction for cave exploration, base jumping, jungle trekking and rock climbing.

It is something that Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) and the extreme park founder Mustapha Al-Bakri Omar have been working on to attract more visitors to boost tourism.

Mustapha said there was an increase of 10,000 visitors to the park this year as compared to last year.

“While the team is constantly maintaining the caves and the jungle as well as identifying more challenging rock climbing routes for visitors, we also hope that the government can help us in transforming the place into a top tourist spot.

“The extreme park has natural limestone caves and visitors can scale the sheer limestone cliffs,” he said.

To experience some of the activities at Damai Cave Extreme Park, MPS organised a cave exploration and jungle trekking trip recently.

About 10 trainers took 38 MPS officers on a guided outing through the park’s three different caves. They also experienced some jungle trekking and a ride on the park’s 250m flying fox, which is one of the longest in the Klang Valley.

During the visit, Mustapha explained how stalagmites and stalactites were formed.

He also showed the group some of the insects and bats that lived in the depths of the caves.

MPS deputy president Mohamad Zain A. Hamid said the council was trying to boost the natural extreme park as a tourist attraction.

“One of the objectives of this visit is for the MPS staff to experience what the Damai Caves has to offer.

“We believe that there is potential for the place to be expanded and attract more locals and international tourists,” he said after the visit.

Mohamad Zain also mentioned that the Tourism and Culture Ministry had approved RM800,000 for the second phase development of the Damai Caves Extreme Park.

“We intend to expand the place further to the White Wall which is located on the left of the Big Tree caves.

“A multi-purpose area catering to extreme sports such as skateboarding and rollerblading will be built and more wall-climbing routes will be explored.

“In the meantime, we are drafting the proposal for the third phase development, which involves the Red Rock located on the right of Damai Caves.

“For the third phase, we will create more educational trekking trails and caving exploration as well as build more recreational facilities.

“We will also rigorously promoting Damai Caves Extreme Park online and are in the midst of roping in the Selangor State Tourism in the development,” he said.

Mustapha said with help from MPS, he hoped to create up to 300 wall-climbing routes for visitors.

“There are more than 100 routes now and we hope to create more.

“Meanwhile, we are in the midst of mapping the caves and we are trying to come up with 3D-mapping. Currently, it is 65% complete.

“We will provide the technical information for MPS,” he said.
