THE National Museum is holding an exhibition featuring the Bronze Age in South-East Asia centring around the Dongson culture.
The Dongson culture, which originated in northern Vietnam, is linked to the initial discovery of bronze drum artefacts and its village is known as one of the earliest metal manufacturing sites in the region.
Cooking utensils, drums, weaponry, needles, fish hooks and agricultural tools such as axes and hoes are some of the tools made during the Dongson culture.
A total of 70 artefacts have been specially brought in from the National Museum of History Vietnam for the exhibition which runs until May 4.
The artefacts include drums, bells, luxury goods, jars, wedding gifts, weapons as well as ritual and funerary objects.
Visitors will also get the chance to discover the characteristics of Dongson culture in detail and the process of making the equipment.
During the launch recently, Tourism and Culture Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Ong Hong Peng paid tribute to the Museums Department, particularly the exhibition steering committee and Muzium Negara staff, for organising the exhibition.
“The Dongson exhibition is one of the many events organised in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2014.
“Without the integral role of museums, much of what has been learnt about ancient, distant or even local cultures would not have been made available to the public,” he said.
Admission to the exhibition is free.
