Duo help orang asli kids by raising funds to buy them pre-school books

A walk to remember: Baldape (centre, in white shirt) and Javnesh (second from right) with the orang asli children at Pos Senderut, Pahang.

A LAWYER and student recently set out on a six-day walk to raise funds to purchase English language pre-school books for a group of orang asli children in Pos Senderut, Pahang.

“Walk With me” is a walk from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands initiated by Baldape Singh and Javnesh Singh as a fundraiser.

The two, together with author Florencia Sandanasamy, who wrote Mum I Can now Read Within 65 days, then drove to the village situated in the deep mountain valleys of the Titiwangsa Range.

“We did this charity walk to raise funds for the aboriginal pre-school children so that they would able to read the English language books to study and familiarise themselves with the language.

“These books are specially designed for pre-school children who are slow learners and have short attention span.

“The books ensure easy and effective learning incorporated with lots of fun to do activities and games,’’ said 21-year-old Javnesh, who is pursuing a diploma in TESOL.

Javnesh said the books would give the orang asli children an opportunity to grasp the language from an early age.

“I noticed the children were very passionate to learn and were glad to receive the books,” said Javnesh, adding that he and Baldape were both elated with the children’s response.

The duo said they would continue to organise walks for charity.
