Beauty in the banal: Is it a cereal box? A packet of biscuits? Or outrageously cute bags?

The latest collection from a British bag brand is centred on the juxtaposition of humour found in everyday items.

According to Anya Hindmarch, her latest collection began with the idea of “finding the beauty in the banal”.

That means it could be anything, from the vivid “pop” graphics of a washing powder box or the guilty pleasure of the humble chocolate digestive.

“I wanted to treat the everyday ordinary in an extraordinary way; a cereal box in python and household brands celebrated with incredible intarsia leatherwork inlaid and seamlessly joined,” explained the British designer and founder of her eponymous brand.

Hence, its Fall/Winter Counter Culture-themed range is centred on the juxtaposition of humour found in everyday items with luxury, two imperative traits of the brand.

This season, the story of each bag has evolved into refined versions of themselves in a varied colour-smudged palette of olive, cobalt and burgundy aligned with paler counter-colours of chalk, yellow and white. The textures, as well as colours, are amalgamated against each other to create bags with surprise details and functional originality.

Imperial Cereal and Biscuit clutches, made from printed python, demonstrate the season’s core feature of humorous luxury. These are artisan pieces transfigured from household consumer goods.

The Bourbon and Custard Cream – quintessential British biscuits – have, with the help of a 3D scan, been reworked in brass as clutch, lined in suede and finished by hand. The Bourbon is varnished to receive its bronze hue, while the Custard Cream is galvanised with gold.

Following its debut on the runway for last Spring/Summer and originating from a 3D scan, the Crisp Packet clutch returns in green, silver, gold and blue.

The Deconstructed Bathurst continues in its functional evolution and has been given a contrasting extendable strap for a flash of colour. The two-tone element is heightened with colour-smudged variations for its exterior. Snake-skin is intricately printed on to become Biscuit Clutches from Rich Tea, Ginger Nuts and Digestives.

True Brit humour is seen in the small print nutritional information from “Best Before: SS15” to “Allergy Information: May Provoke Jealousy”.

The Featherweight Ebury receives the runway treatment, featuring artwork from recognisable brands (including Frosties and Cornflakes). Extending the alta frequenza build developed last season, the pop elements of the show bags are technically advanced.

For the image, each bag requires up to three or four different skins which has artwork silk printed on it separately before being inlaid into a mould. Through an electrical process, the mould is used to form leather, creating the raised motifs in the design. Following an application of foam to increase the plumpness, this panel is then used within the construction of the bag. The contrast lining, synonymous with this style, continues.

Then there’s the Crazy Bevedere, a cleverly crafted bag that moves and works like a suede bag, but with the resilience of leather. This season, the Belvedere, a familiar style from previous seasons has been reworked with varying sizes and coloured leather strips stitched onto supple suede – a wilder version of the classic Belvedere.

The Vaughan, a modern classic, debuted last season and has progressed into different textures for Fall/Winter, including ponyskin and leather for its two-tone interior.

The Maxi Zip family sees a new addition in the form of the Maxi Zip Top Handle. Having evolved from its traditional shoulder or cross body style, the Maxi Zip Top Hand’s short grab handles provide room for exterior zip pocket and organised interior structuring.

Last, but certainly not least, the Smiley Face returns to feature on several signature pieces, including the Georgiana Clutch, the Pont Tote, the Deconstructed Bathurst and, of course, tassels.

The Fall/Winter collection will be available at Anya Hindmarch in Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur.
