As a purveyor of luxury leather goods, the Spanish brand has a rich history that dates all the way back to 1846.
One thing common amongst big names in fashion like Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Hermes is their immensely colourful heritage. From modest beginnings, they have grown to be recognisable brands.
Loewe (pronounced LO-ee-VAY) is of no exception. Founded in Madrid, it originally existed in 1846 as a collective workshop of leather artisans – after which it was taken over by Enrique Loewe Roessberg 26 years later.
Thereon, the Loewe name in Spain has been synonymous with elegance and refinement, but especially for leather goods. It is said that a certain handbag in iguana, crocodile or snakeskin from Loewe was the “It Bag” for Spanish ladies in 1905!
During the “roaring twenties”, it was dainty bags for the women and vanity cases for the men that became highly sought after from Loewe. The brand even managed to survive the turmoil that is the Spanish civil war in the 1930s.
The 50s and beyond saw the retail expansion of Loewe across Spain, and other countries. In 1963, the brand reached London and in the 70s, cities further away like Hong Kong and Tokyo received the brand too.
Fast forward to modern times, Loewe is now owned by international luxury goods group LVMH. Only recently appointed as creative director of the brand (Sept 2013) is one of fashion’s brightest stars: 30-year-old Irish-born designer JW Anderson.
Besides having his own eponymous label, Anderson has worked in collaboration with high-street labels like Topshop. He also clinched the Emerging Talent Award for ready-to-wear at the British Fashion Awards in 2012.
Loewe’s history nevertheless also includes some memorable advertising campaigns, shot by fashion’s premier image makers such as Steven Klein, Peter Linbergh and Mario Testino. Yasmin le Bon, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington were amongst those featured by Loewe in its past ads.
Loewe in Malaysia
Loewe is now opening a new store in Kuala Lumpur. Situated in Pavilion KL, the 117sqm retail space will feature the designs of world-famed architect Peter Marino. Marino is known for specialising in creating retail spaces for high-end fashion brands.
Loewe’s heritage and luxury appeal are the main inspirations for the concept. Many parts of the store have been described as something that takes on the artisanal qualities the brand subscribes to.
While Loewe has a range of ready-to-wear, the store in KL will focus on offerings of bags and other small leather goods for both men and women. Signature products such as the Amazona and Flamenco can be expected.
As Spain is known for its quality of lambskin, Loewe gets the pick of the best. The bags made from napa leather that you see in-store thus have an immensely soft feel, as well as exquisite suppleness and sheen.
Other materials, which include box calf and exotic skins, are used too. This is in addition to the often-ingenious interior designs, making the different bags from Loewe functional beauties.
Loewe’s Pavilion KL store will even offer (for a limited period) its Amazona Atelier – an exclusive service, which allows customers to custom-make their own Amazona bag in four different types of leather and in 131,265 different colour combinations.
The Amazona was created in 1975 but yet, is still highly sought after today. This is to be the first time that the Amazona Atelier service is brought into Malaysia and offered to customers here.
Another latest is the Loewe Indigo, a carefree collection inspired by jeans. In this, all designs are made from premium suede that has been specially dyed, finished and embossed to look and feel like denim.
Other Spring/Summer 2014 Loewe must-haves include the new Origami Cubo and Origami Pillow. These bags are collapsible whereby they can be stored easily in a flat form.
There is also the latest Vega, a flat open tote – a classic from the archives of Loewe which was revived for the brand’s collaborative collection with Junya Watanabe from last season.
