The evolution of the famous social network.
TUESDAY, Feb 4 marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of Facebook, or rather TheFacebook, as it was known at the time. Initially created for Harvard students, the website has since become one of the most powerful forces on the Internet, with over one billion users. Below is a look at the evolution of the famous social network.
Feb 4, 2004: TheFacebook.com launches as something of a digital interactive yearbook for Harvard students. Less than 20 years old, Mark Zuckerberg developed the site along with three other Harvard students.
Sept 26, 2006: After shortening its name to Facebook one year earlier, the network opens membership to anyone over the age of 13 with a valid e-mail address.
Aug 26, 2008: Facebook reaches 100 million subscribers.
Oct 13, 2010: The Social Network, a film about the history of the social network’s launch, arrives in US theatres. The movie went on to win three Oscars, including the one for best adapted screenplay.
Nov 15, 2010: The site launches a messaging service that gives all members an @facebook.com e-mail address.
Dec 15 2010: Mark Zuckerberg is named Time’s Person of the Year.
Sept 22, 2011: Facebook introduces its new newsfeed-style profile layout, which is then rolled out to users worldwide.
May 18, 2012: Facebook goes public on the Nasdaq stock market for a total value of US$104bil (RM348bil).
June 7, 2012: In the US, Facebook launches its new app downloading platform, offering access to paid and free apps from all terminals, mobile or otherwise.
Feb 3, 2013: The site launches Facebook Paper, a sort of virtual newspaper that aggregates news from contacts and from various media outlets into a single newsfeed. – AFP Relaxnews
