The Australian carrier Qantas, recognised as one of the world's best airlines, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Netflix and Spotify, offering passengers free access to content from both digital entertainment giants.
Qantas has gone to great lengths to boost WiFi speed onboard its planes, bringing new possibilities in terms of in-flight entertainment for the airline's passengers. The boosted onboard connection promises speeds ten times faster than existing in-flight Wi-Fi.
As a result, from the end of February, the airline will be able to offer in-flight access to Netflix and Spotify on a first aircraft. Both platforms' entertainment offers will roll out progressively to other planes in the Qantas fleet during the second half of 2017.
These partnerships – the first of their kind in the airline industry – will no doubt already be giving competitor carriers ideas. For the time being, the service will only be available on the airline's domestic flights. However, the carrier is currently in talks to extend its high-performance Wi-Fi service to international flights.
In-flight entertainment to take away
Access to movies, TV series and other shows on Netflix will be totally free when passengers sign up to a free trial version of the service. The same applies for listening to music on Spotify, with free access to the Premium service. Unlike the free version, Spotify Premium allows users to enjoy ad-free listening.
Passengers will have free access to Netflix and Spotify during the flight then for the following 30 days.
The new Qantas in-flight package also includes free access to Foxtel. This Australian TV service will allow passengers to stream live sports fixtures, news bulletins and TV shows. — AFP Relaxnews
