KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 2 Laura Massaro endured a five-game thriller to clinch victory over world No. 3 Raneem El Weleily and emerge as the Windy City Open champion.
The England-born player certainly showed her fighting spirit winning 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 3-11, 11-6 in the final in Chicago.
The 30-year-old will be a strong contender for the Women’s World Championships in Penang from March 15-23. However, the British Open champion will have to face her biggest obstacle, namely world No. 1 Nicol David.
In the men’s category of the Windy City Open, second seed Gregory Gaultier of France outplayed Egypt’s Ramy Ashour 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 in only 25 minutes.
World No. 3 Ramy, who eased past an injured top seed Nick Matthew in the semi-finals, also seemed to be injured in the final and lost out easily to Gaultier.
