Figure skater Julian Yee qualifies for Winter Olympics

PETALING JAYA: The Jalur Gemilang will fly at the Winter Olympics in the figure skating event thanks to Julian Yee Zhi-Jie (pic) who will take part in the figure skating event in South Korea next year.

Yee will be the second Malaysian to compete in the Olympics after Jeffrey Webb, 18, who had also qualified for the slalom competition.

Yee, 20, took to Instagram to document the historic event on Saturday, stating that it has been a long, tiring and meaningful journey.

"The milestone has been achieved and Malaysia will for sure be at the 2018 Winter Olympics! I've finally made it!

"Thank you to everyone who has supported me and given me the strength. Without you guys it would be impossible," he added in the caption of a picture taken at the Gangneung Olympic Park in South Korea.

Yee, who is ranked 38th in the world, achieved the feat after his sixth placing at the 49th CS Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany earlier the same day.

During the event, the 2017 SEA Games gold medallist garnered a score of 71.93 points in his short programme.

His free skate routine, where he was placed third, gave him the points needed (148.74) to place in the top seven to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
