Women paddlers in good stead after two wins

GLASGOW: Malaysia came back from a tie down to upset Canada 3-2 to register their second win in the women's Group 6 table tennis team match at the Scotstoun Sports Campus.

Malaysia, who steam-rolled past Papua New Guinea 3-0 in the morning on Thursday, are favourites to top the group after the victory over the Canadians.

Veteran Beh Lee Wei lost the first singles match to Mo Zhang 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, 19-17, 11-3.

But Ng Sock Khim levelled the score for Malaysia by defeating Anqi Luo 13-11, 11-7, 11-9.

Lee Wei-Ho Ying gave Malaysia the lead with 11-7, 11-5, 11-9 win over Anqi-Betty.

However, the Mo Zhang, fought her way back to beat Ho Ying 9-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-7, 11-7 to level the tie.

But it was in vain as Sock Khim clinched the winning point with a 11-9, 11-4, 7-11, 11-7 win over Betty.

The Malaysian men's team, who beat Zambia 3-0 in the opening match, gave a good fight to Australia before going down 3-2.

Malaysia lost the first two singles matches. Mohd Shakirin Ibrahim went down 10-12, 9-11, 3-11 to William Henzell while Mohd Rizal Mah was beaten by Xin Yan 9-11, 4-11, 11-1, 11-9.

But Malaysia fought back to win next two ties.

Shakirin-Foo Dun Ley came back from a set down to beat David Powell-Xin Yan 6-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9.

Rizal showed nerves of steel to defeat Powell 4-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-13, 11-5.

But Dun Ley could not deliver the winning point after losing 2-11, 10-12, 5-11 to Henzell.
