Insp Sheila to file preliminary objection to three charges

KUALA LUMPUR: The female inspector who is facing three charges, including insulting the modesty of a police officer, will be filing a preliminary objection to the charges.

Lawyer M. Manoharan, who is representing Insp Sheila Sharon Steven Kumar (pic), 35, told the Selayang Sessions Court of his client’s intention when the matter was brought up for mention before Magistrate Chai Guan Hock here.

He said the defence would file the preliminary objection as the charges involved constitutional issues apart from being baseless and frivolous.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Anis Farhah Ahmad Hilmi informed the court that the prosecution had handed over parts of the documents related to the case to the defence with the exception of the video recordings of the alleged incidents.

Insp Sheila was accused of intimidating M. Silverkoomarie, 69, at a shoplot in Jalan SG 1/1, Taman Sri Gombak near here at 12 noon on June 15.

The charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries a maximum two-year imprisonment or fine or both, if convicted.

She was also charged with insulting the modesty of one P. Taneswaran, 31, by calling him “fat, bald and looking like a rhinoceros” an hour later at the same location on the same day.

The charge under Section 509 of the Code carries a maximum five-year imprisonment or fine or both, if convicted.

Meanwhile, at a separate Magistrate’s Court, deputy public prosecutor Erneetha Kaur Beghwant Singh informed Magistrate Nur Hafizah Rajuni that the prosecution had handed over parts of the documents in the case to the defence.

At this court, Insp Sheila faces a charge where she allegedly insulted the modesty of L/Kpl Abdul Arif Farhan Abdul Razak by uttering inappropriate words about his police rank at 1.25pm at the same place and date.

For this offence, she was also charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code.

Both courts have fixed Aug 22 for mention.

Insp Sheila landed in hot water in June when a viral video emerged showing her arguing with other police personnel and civilians.

She was detained by the Gombak police on June 18 and subsequently released on police bail.

It was reported that Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad had issued a statement saying that Insp Sheila has been suspended from her duties pending legal procedures against her.
