13 motorcycles destroyed in fire

GEORGE TOWN: A total of 13 motorcycles parked at Blok 3 of the Desa Mawar Flats in Ayer Itam were destroyed in an early morning fire on Tuesday (Nov 9).

A Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the department received a distress call at 4.12am and a team of seven firemen from Paya Terubong fire station was deployed and reached the scene nine minutes later.

"When the firemen arrived, all 13 motorcycles were totally destroyed in the parking lot of the flat," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

The spokesman said that the firemen also conducted an overhaul operation and thorough checks to ensure that the fire was completely doused.

He said the team managed to get the fire under control at 4.26am and was extinguished at 4.32am.

The operation ended at 4.46am and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire and total losses are still being investigated.
