Customs Dept seizes smuggled liquor worth RM244,000

ALOR SETAR: The Customs Department has seized contraband liquor worth more than RM244,000 at the Kuala Kedah cargo jetty here.

State Customs director Datuk Johari Alifiah said the liquor was seized from an unattended bonded lorry last Friday (May 24) based on information received by the Department.

"After waiting for three hours, the team moved in and found 1,800 bottles from 29 brands of liquor hidden in empty boxes at the back of the lorry," he said.

Johari said the liquor was worth more than RM140,000 with an additional customs duty of RM104,000.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for possessing goods that have yet to be approved by Customs.

Johari added that the lorry boarded a cargo pontoon from Pulau Langkawi before arriving at the Kuala Kedah jetty.
