PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan's effort to introduce reforms could be derailed if racial and religious problems in the country are left unchecked, says PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic).

He said the problem of race relations in the country appeared to be getting worse, amidst Pakatan's efforts to realise change and reforms.

He said the reform efforts must include meaningful economic measures.

"The threat of racist and communal flames should not be taken lightly and brushed aside, and if left unchecked could destroy all moves to put the country back on track," he said in a message to mark the first year of Pakatan in power.

Anwar, who is set to become the next Prime Minister, thanked Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his efforts in rallying the then-opposition parties together to bring about change in the country's political landscape.

He said there had been a lot of challenges which began from the awareness and sacrifice of those who wanted reforms and change from 20 years ago.

"There were many tears and sweat that have sparked the people's power on May 9.

"If we look back at all the achievements by the current administration today, it is clearly something that had never been recorded in the history of the nation.

"But, we also cannot deny that there are still many things that should be implemented and administered so the country would be respected by the world," he said.

Anwar, who is also the Port Dickson MP, urged the Pakatan government to ensure that its reform efforts included meaningful economic measures.

He said this was to ensure that the country's wealth did not just circulate among the rich and powerful, but also uplifted those who were poor and struggling.
