S'wak CM joins hundreds to pay last respects to son of colleague

SIBU: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang joined hundreds of people to pay last respects to the late Datuk Andrew Wong Kee Yew, who passed away suddenly on Sunday (Feb 10) night.

Andrew, 42, was the only son and third child in the family of four of Sarawak's Second Finance Minister Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh and Datin Leong Poh Ling.

Accompanying the Chief Minister were Deputy Chief Minister Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Tourism, Arts, Culture Youth and Sports Minister Datuk  Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Sim Kui Hian, other ministers and local dignitaries.

Those from the DAP included Pelawan assemblyman David Wong, Bukit Assek assemblyman Irene Chang and Sibu and Lanang MPs, Oscar Ling and Alice Lau.

Head of State Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is also expected to attend Andrew’s wake at 3.30pm on Wednesday (Feb 13).

As early as 8am on Wednesday, a long line of people started queuing up to for the wake at Nirvana Memorial Park in Mile 23, Jalan Oya, here.

Andrew was found unconscious at around 9.30pm on Sunday by Leong in his dressing room on the upper floor of their family home on Jalan Ipoh.

His mother immediately called doctors at the Rejang Medical Specialist Centre and KPJ, and they tried to resuscitate him for two hours but failed. He died at 11pm.

Meanwhile, Sibu OCPD asst comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, who was also at the wake Wednesday, said the police were still waiting for further laboratory reports from Sibu Hospital on the cause of death.

"We are not sure when the report will be ready," he said.

A postmortem only revealed Andrew suffered a haemorrhage on the left side of the brain and there was also internal bleeding.

The funeral service is scheduled from Thursday (Feb 14) at Nirvana Memorial Park Hall, followed by cremation.
