Ulu Rajang longhouse fire leaves 200 homeless


MIRI: Longhouse settlement Rumah Lorres located in the deep interior of Ulu Rajang in central Sarawak was destroyed in a fire on Saturday night (April 21).  

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department in its report said 39 living quarters were destroyed in the midnight blaze, leaving about 200 homeless.  

"There were no fatalities," it said on Sunday (April 22).  

Firemen from the nearest town of Kapit took about two hours to reach the site by boat.  

There are no roads linking Rumah Lorres to Kapit.  

Bomba Sarawak said the victims are seeking shelter from other longhouses in the vicinity while awaiting help from the welfare authorities.
