Penang floods: Body of missing woman found in Bukit Jambul river

GEORGE TOWN: The flash floods that hit Penang on Friday have killed a 30-year-old factory worker.

The body of Noor Afidah Yajunas was found in a river in Bukit Jambul about 20 hours after she was washed away by floodwaters.

State Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the body was discovered at 7.45am on Saturday.

Noor Afidah was believed to have drowned when she was swept by strong currents into a ravine along Jalan Paya Terubong near Relau while trying to ride her motorcycle through floodwaters gushing from a hillside.

"We couldn't do anything because the current was so powerful," said motorcyclist V. Ramakrishnan, 57, who witnessed the incident.

He said the road had become "a swift-flowing river".

The body was sent to the Penang Hospital for a post-mortem.
