Malaysia to set up its first overseas university in China

NANNING: Malaysia will be setting up its first overseas university campus in China.

Malaysia-China Qinzhou Industrial Park deputy board chairman Datuk Beh Hang Kong revealed that the campus would be located with the industrial park vicinity, but declined to reveal the name of the university involved.

"We will sign a memorandum of cooperation with a private higher learning institution to set up its overseas branch in China.

"If everything goes smoothly, the campus is expected to be opened by 2021," he announced at the 2nd China-Asean Entrepreneurs High-Level Cooperation Dialogue, held in conjunction with the annual China-Asean Expo here from Tuesday to Friday.

"We have entered the last stage of discussions and will announce the details soon," he added.

He said 70% of the university's students would be from China and the rest from Asean countries.

The plan came into being after the historical opening of China's first overseas university campus in Malaysia.

The Xiamen University Malaysia, which was opened last year, has an enrolment of about 2,000 students currently.
