PETALING JAYA: The 30-year-old man who was detained in connection with the murder of policeman L/Kpl Velentino Mesa was on a plane to Sibu when police boarded the aircraft and arrested him.

According to sources, the man is believed to be a relative of the victim.

"The plane was getting ready to take off at the KL International Airport when the police caught up with him," said the source.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Mansor confirmed at the arrest.

"The man from Sibu was then arrested at 1am on Friday to help investigations," he said in the statement on Friday.

The detainee was later remanded until September 7.

Comm Mazlan urged the public not to speculate on the case as it may jeopardise the investigation.

The 29-year-old victim was found in a pool of blood by policemen during a routine patrol stop at the Pinggiran Subang Jaya police station around 3.25am Thursday.

It is learnt that Mesa was on duty alone at the station at the time.

The victim's pistol was also missing from the scene. It is unclear if the pistol has been recovered following the arrest.

Earlier, Comm Mazlan had said the investigation had thus far not revealed any evidence of personal issues, such as unpaid debts.

However, he did not rule out that the victim knew his attacker as he was shot at close range.
