Lorry carrying chemicals overturns near oil palm estate in Rompin

A lorry carrying 16 tonnes of chemicals overturned in Rompin.

KUANTAN: A lorry carrying 16 tonnes of chemicals overturned in Rompin on Friday but fortunately there was no spillage.

State Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Anuar Hassan said the lorry, which was carrying six tonnes of monoethylene glycol and 10 tonnes of diethylene glycol, had crashed near the Sri Melati oil palm plantation at Jalan Keratong—Bukit Serok in Rompin.

"Firefighters from the Muadzam Shah station were dispatched at 5.54am and arrived at the location 66km away about an hour later. There was no spillage and the lorry driver managed to free himself from the vehicle without any injuries.

"An operation to cool the chemical tank was carried out to prevent the chemical from leaking onto the road. The case was reported to the Department of Environment while firefighters cleaned up the accident site," he said in a message on Friday.

Anuar said a crane was used to remove the lorry from the road.

He said the operations commander ordered the control room to notify Roadcare to spread sawdust at the location as there was diesel and engine oil on the road.

The operation ended at 10.05am, he said.
